What is Supplier heatmapping and what are the benefits

Supplier heatmapping is a visual data analysis method employed by procurement and supply chain professionals to efficiently identify and prioritise suppliers based on value or risk. Rather than manually reviewing spreadsheets, teams utilise colour-coded grids (heatmaps) to detect patterns and anomalies across the supplier portfolio.

How Supplier Heatmapping Operates

Heatmaps typically plot suppliers along two principal axes, with the intersection indicating the priority level (“heat”) for each supplier:

Axis 1: Potential Impact (Severity): Assesses a supplier’s significance to business operations, considering factors such as total spend, reliance on single sources, and the consequences of supply disruptions.

Axis 2: Risk Probability (Likelihood): Measures the likelihood of disruption, including geopolitical risks, financial stability, historical quality performance, and adaptability to changing requirements.

Key Benefits

Visual Prioritisation: Enables rapid identification of high-risk, high-impact suppliers (“Red Zone”), facilitating effective allocation of resources.

Performance Benchmarking: Allows for comparative analysis of suppliers across metrics such as quality, pricing, and delivery reliability.

Strategic Decision Support: Provides valuable insights to inform decisions regarding source diversification, inventory management, or relationship termination.

Actionable Reporting: Offers concise summaries for executive review, delivering an overview of supply chain health without overwhelming detail.
